First snow.800 1373, with story

We have had an unusually warm winter season in 2015, with some December temperatures in the 70s.

Overnight we had our first snowfall of the winter, about 6 inches deep, the temperature falling to 20 degrees.  My kids have not had any experience driving in snow and ice so I took each one out for some sliding experience.  Except cars with anti-lock brakes don't skid, but they each got some driving time on the icy streets near our country home, and each was taught where the defroster controls are located on the dash, and they both know how much easier it is to scrape the windshield, if you let the car first assist with its heaters.

On the road, I was too busy concentrating on their driving to stop and take any photos, but I made it a point when I left again, to return to this tree, we had passed next to a pond. That, is when I found the snow drifts could be a foot deep, as I walked to the position to take the photo.

Taken in color, it's only presence was in the brown tree trunk.  Back at base I removed the saturation to a black and white, I adjusted the contrast and brightness, cropped to a pleasing composition, and then added a cyan/blue wash to finish the print.

This was a monopod held, bulky mitten photograph with clumsy hand control.  Adjusting the polarizing filter was quite funny with gloves that big, and it was so difficult to see the results in the viewfinder.  I made my decision by observing changes in the water tones, but it was clearly a guess.
