Is he still there? img920, with story

Description

Sometimes you have to make fun of someone, and in this case it is of me.

I was walking the halls of the university where I had taken the photo of "students", on my way to the professor's cubbyhole when she poked her head out the the room, but not quite entering the hallway.

I imagine she was being asked...

"Is he still there?"  from someone, still in the room.

This isn't so much art but an example of style and an inside note to my watchers.

This brings up an interesting point of personal space.  When I photograph someone from within 5 feet or closer (2 meters), I have already been accepted into their space.  When you photograph someone from more than 10 feet or 3 meters away, you appear to them to be infringing on their privacy and will be met with less warmth and sometimes downright skepticism.

Check it out, it is a curious fact documentary photographers learn from experience.

Taken with my Leica M2 with 50mm F2.0 Summicron, on Kodak Tri-X film in the mid 70s.

Feel free to download, just give me photo credit.

Hi Eugene. I had to laugh when I read your comment about peoples personal space and acceptable distances. I find myself unable to shoot anything lately but even when I am out and about I can't shoot people at all as I just don't have the knack or the ability to put people at ease. Earlier in the year I went to London for the day specifically to shoot and in Hyde park came across two orthodox Jewish gentlemen (black hat/trousers, white shirt, ringlets) one with a huge leg cast sharing a bench deep in heated conversation. I REALLY wanted to take their picture but just couldn't bring myself to just walk up to them, shoot and run. Interrupting didn't seem right either so I lost out :( It's a hump I really must try to get over.
