Description

On my trip to New York City with my father, we stopped in the diamond district to see what we could.  My father's business credentials got us into the back rooms where the work was being done.

In this image the craftsman is soldering prongs onto a ring to hold the diamonds to be mounted later.  This is an apprenticeship business, learned after many years on the bench.  Only after mastering the craft will he go out on his own to earn the rewards of his hard work, and most likely pass the art onto others.

Taken with my Zeiss Contarex with a 55mm F1.4 Planar, on Kodak Panatomic X panchromatic 135mm film, in 1967.  Normally I would have chosen another angle, but as we were guests and their concentration was critical, I worked with what I was given.

Feel free to download, just give me photo credit.

Wonderful shot :)  I have worked in this business for most of my life. It is always interesting to watch a good bench jeweler at work. I bet seeing 47th Street back then was something else. Thanks for posting this. :D
