Description
Now for a little me time. It will be interesting...
Kim Costello took this photo of my start at the Ohio State Time Trial in 1999. I was 50 that year and had been racing for 15 years as a United States Cycling Federation Amateur racer in the Masters Division. My team was Queen City Wheels out of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.
As you can see, the equipment is quite specialized for an out and back mostly flat race, 40 Kilometers long. Aerodynamics is a must, for as you approach 25 mph, 90 percent of your effort is getting past the wind.
That year I received the bronze medal, 3rd place, with an average speed of 23.8 mph (38.3kph), not my all time best but good enough to make the extreme effort worth while. Your heart rate bounces between 155 to 185 bpm the whole time, using up all your energy in the hour effort. With a headwind of about 20-25 mph going out, my speed stayed under 20 mph, but on the return leg I ran out of gear inches (54 tooth front chainring, makes 112") as I maintained speeds in the 30s hitting a high of 32mph (52kph). If I had a 12 tooth rear cog (121"), instead of a 13 tooth, I would have hit speeds up to 35, possible even higher.
I pulled this image out of my old photos search and now that I am anticipating a hip replacement soon, I will most likely return to racing as a 65 year old. Cycling was another full time diversion in my life, which subdued my photography, until I found a way to work sport journalism into my racing. In my gallery, under "us" is a photograph of me and my BMW motorcycle going off to the races, the bicycle loaded onto the frame I built to carry it.
