Boy on stoop. image 353, with story

Near the top of the very long hill, this young boy sits holding empty soda pop cartons.  In those days bottles were returned for their two cents deposit.  This kept them off the streets, and brought some income to those who would collect them. He is well dressed for the neighborhood, with shoes shined to boot.  I'm willing to bet he left the inner city neighborhood to make something of himself, some 50 years ago.

Taken in my Sycamore Hill Street series, with a Nikon F and 50mm F2.0 Nikkor on Kodak 135mm Plus X panchromatic film in 1969.  Never printed, this is an alternate image to the one I had previously selected.

Sycamore Hill Street is one of the old neighborhoods near downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.  The step he is sitting on has seen much wear over the years.  The door was repaired recently with scrounged materials, just enough to get by, similar to the many buildings in the area where he was living.
