Description

To keep my gear in top shape I will need to overhaul shutters from time to time (ha ha), (sorry about that).

Before I undertake a difficult repair it is vitally important to get a detailed photograph of where each piece belongs.  This is the inside of a Synchro Compur shutter for a 180mm Schneider Symmar view camera lens on its board.  Once you remove the front and back elements (they unscrew), you can work safely without hurting the lens elements.  This is what it looks like with the cover plate removed.

My task was to get the slow speed train (1/15th to 1 second) up and running smoothly.  Dust and lack of lubrication are the main culprits.  If you look at the 4 and 5 o'clock section of the shutter you will find the slow speed gear train.  I prefer a non oil base lubricant.  Apply sparingly to the top and bottom axle pivots and it should get you running smooth again.  I prefer molybdenum disulfide and graphite as, unlike oil, it will not attract dust or grime, and will flow to the friction points.

This is an advance level repair, not for the work  done, but for the damage you can cause if a small piece gets out of position, hence the detailed photograph.  It's the springs that cause the headaches.

Actually, the whole slow-time gear train, which acts as a retarder, runs essentially without lubrication, but it must be clean, as all the rest.
Lubricant is usually only needed for the power-train mechanism.
The blades should also run without oil.

Oil may help and hides dust, but it tends then to migrate and stick.. to the worst it sticks to the blades or it makes slow speed slower.
